Initiation in the 70's
"McMillan Hall had a tradition of 'welcoming' the incoming freshman by running them around campus serenading the girls dorms with 'Buffalo Gals Won't You Come Out Tonight' and 'White Christmas.' They would each be required to wear a white T-shirt over anything else they chose to wear. Once they'd been taken all over campus and up and down a few hills, the were lined up on the grass out front of Mac Hall for the arrival of "The Hippie.' All evening, stories of the terror that was the Hippie would slip from the upperclassmen. reality, In the Hippie was usually an upperclassmen dressed in a silly plastic Roman Soldiers helmet. He would heap verbal abuse on the line of freshmen, most of who were having trouble keeping a straight face. The Hippie would then march the line of freshman up to the attic of Mac Hall where, one at a time, they would have to stand in a garbage can full of ice water, and tell a joke. Following that, all the upperclassmen would fall on them and rip off their T-shirt. With that, they would be declared official Mac Men" (Doug Harlow, class of 1976).
